A16 – DB2 Professionals – Understand your impact on Capacity Planning

Room Trinity A => Thu, May 26, 2016 (10:30 AM – 11:30 AM)

Speaker Bio: Rick Weaver joined DataKinetics as its Sales Engineer in November 2014 with responsibility for technical pre-sales for several mainframe application performance products that are largely focused on DB2, IMS, and CICS VSAM applications, as well as data replication, mainframe cost reduction, and DB2 quality assurance.

Rick has spent more than 35 years immersed in two disciplines that usually represent two professions: technology and communications. He has the rare ability to complement his technical knowledge and expertise with exceptional communications skills, enabling him to convey and make transparent complex technologies.

Rick has garnered extensive experience in mainframe database restart, recovery, replication and performance; published several magazine articles and white papers; and spoken widely on database recovery at several international conferences and regional user groups.

As BMC Software Product Manager for DB2 z/OS, Rick took responsibility for a DB2 product line that generated $240MM in FY12 revenues. His responsibilities included planning release content and timeline, market sensing activities, strategic planning, and creating marketing and sales support tools. His ability to communicate enabled him to convince the developers to allow the use of DB2 logs for forward recovery from Online Consistent Copies, an exclusive BMC software capability that created consistent copies with no outage. This led to increased customer satisfaction and additional sales—and a patent awarded in March 2014.

Audience experience level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Presentation Category: Application Design, Data Management, Managing Database Resources, Managing Performance
Presentation Platform: DB2 for z/OS
Audiences this presentation will apply to: Application Developers, Data Architects, Database Administrators, Systems Programmers, New Users, IT Managers
Technical areas this presentation will apply to: Database Performance (DB2 for z/OS), SQL and XML Performance
Objective 1: DB2 Tuning is more than meeting performance SLAs – it can impact your monthly license charge back to IBM.
Objective 2: Introduce DB2 Professionals to AWLC and MLC.
Objective 3: Introduce DB2 Professionals to IBM Soft Capping and Defined Capacity concepts.
Objective 4: Introduce DB2 Professionals to Sub Capacity Reporting Tool (SCRT) report, and Rolling 4 Hour Average metrics.
Objective 5: Explain how System, Database, and Application tuning all impact the SCRT report, and hence the MLC.
Abstract: Many (most) companies use some form of Workload License Charge (e.g. Advanced WLC) to determine the cost of their IBM products on a monthly basis (the Monthly License Charge, or MLC). The products subject to Monthly License Charge include z/OS, IMS, CICS and DB2 among others. Typically this work to determine the MLC is done in a Capacity Planning group, with little input from the groups that impact those costs. This presentation will educate the DB2 Professional (System Programmer, DBA, and Developer) on how DB2 Performance tuning can reduce operational costs and free up cycles for new revenue-generating applications.
