High-performance table-driven architecture

tablesONLINE is an extension of tableBASE, a flexible, interactive, completely dynamic online editor that literally places the powerful capabilities of tableBASE at your fingertips. It gives your development staff, administrators and online users the tools they need to quickly produce efficient and accurate table-based programs.
With its unique high-performance table-driven architecture, tablesONLINE allows you to make online database schema changes in real time -- as many changes as you wish -- without incurring any performance degradation whatsoever.

Dynamically create individualized tables and menus

tablesONLINE handles data entry and table editing tasks, and provides the access controls and data validation services essential to such tasks. The tablesONLINE product consists of a set of fast, efficient, table-driven programs that can run with CICS and, in a simplified version, with TSO/ISPF. The product supports a virtually unlimited number of windows, row structures, and users, and includes a rich exit set that allows you to change, extend, and give aliases to commands.
tablesONLINE allows users to build automatic table update applications by simply editing the controlling tables supplied with the product. Custom application menus and data entry screens can then call other routines to perform security checks and calculations, including controlling access to specific tables. For example, one tablesONLINE customer in the options trading business has used the product to dynamically create individualized tables and menus based on the user’s workload history. And applications programmers use tablesONLINE to create cascading menus that track and coordinate table changes for them, bringing more accuracy and efficiency into their work.

A framework for application development

Two tablesONLINE components, the menu system and the table editor, constitute a framework for application development. The tablesONLINE menu system provides a user interface to tablesONLINE functions, and for any other processes that are conveniently controlled from a menu-driven interface. The table editor is a utility for editing and displaying data, and it includes an extensive set of built-in edit and display features.
tablesONLINE further reduces software development workloads by offering programmers built-in validation features -- display masks, edit patterns, existence checks, exclusion checks, and range checks, among many others -- that allow them to save time when writing programs. In addition, tablesONLINE scales down maintenance costs for table-driven applications by providing tools to directly control table behavior, i.e., maintenance efforts are significantly reduced because program changes do not require recompilation or expensive programming expertise to implement them.
